Vijay’s TVK readies for ‘resort politics’ ahead of Tamil Nadu counting day
With exit polls suggesting a strong debut for TVK, the party prepares a contingency plan to keep its MLAs together
As Tamil Nadu awaits its next chief minister and the possibility of a hung Assembly looms ahead of the May 4 results, actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is preparing for a tightly contested post-result scenario in its electoral debut.

Media reports suggest the party has made preparations for accommodation at a resort near Chennai for its winning candidates, fuelling speculation of possible “resort politics” if the verdict throws up a close contest.
Vijay’s caution
According to party sources, functionaries were asked to identify a resort in Poonjeri, near Mamallapuram, as exit polls pointed to a strong debut for the party. In political terms, “resort politics” refers to keeping elected representatives in a secure location to prevent poaching from rival parties when numbers are critical for government formation.

At a meeting on May 2 at the party headquarters, Vijay had instructed his party members not to disperse after the results and to report directly to the party’s Panaiyur headquarters. The directive is seen as an attempt to maintain cohesion within the ranks during a crucial phase. He also cautioned them against possible approaches from rival parties, urging them to remain firm even if offered inducements.
Exit poll projections
Exit polls have projected a wide range of outcomes for TVK. While Today’s Chanakya has estimated around 63 seats with a vote share of about 30 per cent, Axis My India has projected a much stronger showing, placing the party in the 98–120 seat range in the 234-member Assembly, close to the majority mark of 117.

Party insiders have said contingency plans are being readied, including the option of moving MLAs to a secure location if required. The move follows concerns during the scrutiny phase, when a TVK candidate from Edappadi was briefly untraceable, raising fears of vulnerability to pressure tactics.
Analysts say TVK’s entry has already altered Tamil Nadu’s electoral landscape, setting the stage for a potentially complex outcome.
