India skipper Virat Kohli is on the verge of breaking another record of his former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni when he takes the field against New Zealand in the third T20I match in Hamilton on Wednesday (January 29).

The captain is just 25 runs short of surpassing his compatriot in the elite list of highest run-scorers as captain in the shortest format.

Kohli, who is currently in the fourth spot behind MS Dhoni (1,112 runs), New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson (1148), and South Africa captain Faf du Plessis (1,273), is also one fifty-plus score away from becoming the captain with most fifty-plus scores in T20Is alongside South Africa’s Faf du Plessis and Williamson who have eight such knocks.

However, the list doesn’t end with just two records. Kohli also has the chance of becoming the second captain ever to hit 50 sixes as skipper in T20Is – a feat recently achieved by England’s Eoin Morgan. Kohli just needs seven more sixes to join the list.

India took a seven-wicket victory in the second T20I against New Zealand in Auckland on Sunday (January 26) to lead the series 2-0.

The venue of Eden Park, which is known for its shorter boundaries and produced more than 400 runs in the first game on Friday (January 24), made the Kiwis struggle to post 132 for five while batting first.

India will enter third of the five-match shortest format series trying to maintain the lead.
