It is IPL time again. The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) opens at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium this Saturday, March 26, with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) facing Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a repeat of last year’s final.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released the schedule for the league phase while the venues and dates for the playoffs will be decided later.

The Federal presents to you a complete guide on IPL 2022.

Key dates

IPL 2022 will begin on March 26 and conclude on May 29. Seventy league matches and four playoff games will be played over 65 days.

Matches/Start time

The 10-team IPL 2022 will see 74 matches, 14 more than the previous year. There will be 12 double-headers in total with the first match starting at 3:30 PM IST. All evening matches begin at 7:30 pm IST. The final game of the league stage will be played between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 22 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

New teams

IPL 2022 sees the addition of two new franchises – Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans.

Cricket during COVID-19

The league will be played in a bio-secure environment at a single hub to avoid air travel which is considered as a major reason for the spread of COVID-19 infection, thereby affecting the players and the league/matches, the BCCI said. In IPL 2021, several players had tested positive for coronavirus and the league had to be postponed on May 4. Later, it was moved to United Arab Emirates (UAE), and completed in October.

Venues

A total of 70 league matches will be played across four venues in Mumbai and Pune. The venues for the playoff matches will be decided later. In Mumbai, Wankhede Stadium will host 20 matches, Brabourne Stadium (CCI) 15, and DY Patil Stadium 20. Pune’s MCA International Stadium has got 15 games.

IPL 2022 format

All teams will play four matches each at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium, three matches each at Brabourne Stadium and MCA International Stadium. The 10 teams will play a total of 14 league matches (7 home matches and 7 away matches), followed by four playoff games. Each team will play 5 teams twice and the remaining 4 teams only once (2 only home and 2 only away). To decide on the above, teams have been assigned in two virtual groups based on the number of IPL titles won followed by the number of final matches played by the respective teams.

Virtual groups

Five-time IPL champion Mumbai Indians (MI) is the top-ranked team having won the trophy most times, followed by CSK, which has four titles.

Each team will play twice with the teams in their group and with the team in the same row in the second group. With the rest of the teams in the second group, they will play only once during the season.

For example, in Group A, MI will play 2 matches each against KKR, RR, DC, LSG. MI will also play 2 matches against CSK and 1 match each against other teams in Group B. Similarly, in Group B, RCB will play 2 matches against CSK, SRH, PBKS, and GT. RCB will also play 2 matches against RR and 1 match each against other teams in Group A.

No home advantage

Barring Mumbai Indians, no team has the home advantage in the league phase.

Qualification for playoffs

As has been the case, the top four teams at the end of the league phase qualify for the playoffs. Despite the virtual groups, all 10 teams will be ranked together at the league table. The top-two finishers at the end of the league stage play Qualifier 1 with the winner going straight to the final while the loser plays the winner of Eliminator (3 vs 4) in Qualifier 2. The final on May 29 will be contested between the winners of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2.
