10-minute deliveries: TMC’s Mahua Moitra to raise issue in Parliament

Update: 2022-05-29 12:27 GMT

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra on Sunday (May 29) opposed the 10-minute delivery services offered by online food-ordering platforms and said she would raise the issue in Parliament.

In March, online food delivery platform Zomato announced that it will soon start 10-minute deliveries. Following this, the company faced severe backlash on social media. Later, the company clarified that it will be for specific nearby locations, popular and standardised menu items only.

Also, there are other online platforms including Blinkit (previously known as Grofers) who promise to deliver groceries and other items in under 10 minutes.

Calling for this move to be either regulated or outlawed, Moitra said no civilised society can be incentivising delivery executives to break traffic rules.

“10 minute deliveries need to be regulated/outlawed. No civilised society can be incentivising delivery executives to break traffic rules & put own & other’s lives at risk. All for a quicker pizza. Am going to raise this in parliament,” Moitra tweeted.

Zomato founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal, while justifying the 10-minute delivery plan, had said in March, “… I started feeling that the 30-minute average delivery time by Zomato is too slow, and will soon have to become obsolete. If we don’t make it obsolete, someone else will. Innovating and leading from the front is the only way to survive (and therefore thrive) in the tech industry. And here we are… with our 10-minute food delivery offering – Zomato Instant.”

He added, “Nobody in the world has so far delivered hot and fresh food in under 10 minutes at scale, and we were eager to be the first to create this category, globally!

“10 minute delivery will be for specific nearby locations, popular and standardised menu items only. No penalties for late deliveries, no incentives for on-time deliveries for both 10 and 30 minute deliveries.”

Blinkit CEO Albinder Dhindsa in August 2021 clarified about the 10-minute delivery by saying, “Our partner stores are located within 2 kilometres of our customers. We have 60+ stores in Delhi, and 30+ stores in Gurgaon already! Our stores are so densely located that we can deliver 90% of the orders within 15 minutes even if our riders drove under 10kmph!”
