Tamil Nadu: 1,149 fresh COVID-19 cases take tally to 22,333; toll 173

Tamil Nadu recorded the highest single day spike with 1,149 people testing positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, taking the taly to 22,333 in the state, while 13 more coronavirus-related deaths were recorded.

Of the total 1,149 active cases reported on Sunday, 95 people were returnees from other states.

As per the health department bulletin, the highest number of cases were reported in Chennai where 804 people tested positive for the virus, while Chengalpattu reported 85 cases, 47 and 45 cases were recorded in Tiruvallur and Tiruvannamalai respectively.

Of the 22,333 cases in the state, nearly 60 per cent were from Chennai with 14,802 people testing positive for COVID-19.

The state also reported 13 deaths, taking the death toll to 173 to date.

There are about 9,400 active COVID-19 cases, most of which are treated and monitored at the dedicated coronavirus treatment centres in the capital city, while high risk patients are being treated at the tertiary hospitals in the state. As many as 12,757 people have recovered and been discharged.

Of the total active cases reported on Sunday, as many as 1,286 children were below the age of 12 and 18,995 people were between the age of 13-60 and 2,052 people were above 60.

On Sunday, about 12,049 people were tested in the state taking the total number to 4, 69, 282 tests.

Until Saturday, as many as 99,651 passengers who travelled by road and air were tested for the coronavirus, of which about 1,570 people tested positive for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the state government has asked all the BC, MBC and SC/ST hostels in the state to open in the view of the Class X board exams to be held from June 15.

Earlier in the day, the state government also announced a slew of relaxations including bus services between the districts of the same zone barring Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur.
