In Vizag, police thrash drunk doctor for allegedly abusing govt

Visakhapatnam police on Saturday reportedly thrashed and dragged on the road a doctor, who was suspended last month for alleging inadequate supply of safety equipment, for allegedly abusing the state government in an inebriated condition in public.

Visakhapatnam police on Saturday (May 17) reportedly thrashed and dragged on the road a doctor, who was suspended last month for alleging inadequate supply of safety equipment, for allegedly abusing the state government in an inebriated condition in public.

According to a Hindustan Times report, videos showing a police constable kicking a bare-chested Dr. K Sudhakar, had gone viral. With his hands tied behind his back, the doctor was thrashed by the police, and was later bundled into an auto-rickshaw and taken to the police station; all in full public view.

The constable who behaved rudely with the doctor has been put under suspension and is pending an inquiry, according to Police Commissioner RK Meena.

The doctor, who worked as an anesthesiologist at the Narsipatnam government hospital, had alleged before the media in May that the state government was not providing them with adequate N-95 masks and PPE kits. He was suspended on disciplinary grounds after the government ordered a probe on his allegations.

The incident was condemned by the opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the CPI and other parties, with TDP politburo member Varla Ramaiah alleging that police and ruling party leaders were trying to project the doctor as a mentally challenged person to defend their action.

According to the police commissioner, the police control room had received a call saying a person was creating nuisance on the highway at Akkayyapalem. Immediately, the fourth town police had rushed to spot and identified the person as Dr. Sudhakar.

He said the doctor was in an inebriated condition and behaved rudely with the police, and even snatched the mobile phone from a constable and threw it away. He said the doctor is apparently suffering from some psychological problems, and he has been sent for medical examination.

“After receiving the medical report, we shall file a case against Sudhakar under appropriate sections of Indian Penal Code,” a report quoted the commissioner as saying.
