India clocks in 11,929 new COVID cases in single-day spike


India which stands fourth in the list of countries with the maximum number of COVID-19 cases recorded yet another single-day spike of 11,929 new infections, on Sunday (June 14), taking the total number of infections to 3,20,92.

According to figures released by the health ministry, the death toll rose by 311 to 9,195 on Sunday.

This is the second time the country recorded more than 11,000 cases in 24 hours. More than 70,000 cases and 2,000 deaths have been recorded in last week alone as cases rose exponentially in Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.

There are 1,49,348 active cases of coronavirus, while 1,62,378 people have recovered, according to the ministry data.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan are holding a meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in this regard on Sunday with the capital clocking in more than 2,000 cases for a second consecutive day on Saturday.

Delhi Lt Governor Anil Bajaj has ordered that police fine up to ₹1,000 on those violating COVID-19 rules.

The situation in Maharashtra too remains grim with the state recording 3,493 new cases and 127 deaths till Saturday.

Tamil Nadu too recorded its biggest single-day spike of 1,982 patients, taking the state’s tally to 40,698. Chennai alone accounts for 14,180 of the total cases.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah and Health Minister Harsh Vardhan to review the COVID-19 situation in the country.
