Ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi dies in court
Former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, who was removed from office in 2013 after widespread protests, reportedly died in court. He fainted after a court session, where he was facing espionage charges, and died after that, said a state TV.
Morsi served as the fifth president of Egypt. During his term, he issued a temporary constitutional declaration that granted him unlimited powers, including to legislate without judicial oversight. On June 30, 2013, protests broke out across the country, calling for his resgination. He was unseated by a military coup on July 3 of the same year.
After he was overthrown, Morsi was charged with various crimes and prosecutors sought the death penalty. The death penalty was overturned in November 2016 but he remained imprisoned.
