Pinarayi Vijayan, Leader of the Opposition in Kerala has launched a sharp attack on the Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for his remarks linking his state's anti-encroachment agency HYDRAA with Adolf Hitler, calling the comments "shocking" and contrary to democratic values.

In a strongly worded statement, Vijayan alleged that Reddy had publicly expressed admiration for Hitler while explaining the rationale behind HYDRAA, a key component of the Telangana government's anti-encroachment and demolition drive. The CPI(M) leader said such remarks were deeply disturbing and had no place in a democracy.

However, in reality, the name HYDRAA had nothing to do with Adolf Hitler at all and there lies the catch.

Row over HYDRAA

The controversy erupted after Revanth Reddy claimed at a public event that the name and concept of HYDRAA had been inspired by Adolf Hitler.

"Hydra, the word is Hitler's favourite word. His core team called Hydra could assassinate anyone. So I have taken inspiration from Hitler. I have named the special task force as HYDRAA," Reddy said, triggering a political storm.

HYDRAA, or the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency, is a specialised task force established by the Telangana government. Functioning as an independent statutory body, and tasked with disaster response, the protection of public lands, and the prevention of encroachments across the Telangana Core Urban Region (TCUR).

Vijayan hits out

Reacting to the remarks, Vijayan said such kind of remarks could not be brushed aside as a mere verbal slip. He argued that the statement reflected a deeper political mindset and accused the Congress of having a history of undermining democratic rights. Drawing parallels with the Emergency period, he alleged that Reddy's comments represented a continuation of that legacy.

Vijayan further claimed that Reddy's earlier association with right-wing politics may have shaped such views and accused the Congress of accommodating those positions within its fold. Reiterating the Left's long-standing criticism of the Congress, he said the party has often failed to challenge the ideological framework of the BJP and RSS consistently.

Marvel connection

However, in reality, Hydra was neither Hitler's favourite word nor the name of any core Nazi assassination squad.

While attempting to describe the power and reach of HYDRAA, Reddy appeared to have mixed up real-world history with fictional narratives from Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In Marvel lore, Hydra is portrayed as a secretive authoritarian organisation with links to Nazi Germany. It is led by fictional characters such as Johann Schmidt, also known as Red Skull, a close associate of Hitler in the Marvel universe, and Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, another fictional Nazi officer.

There is no historical evidence that Adolf Hitler operated a unit, organisation or inner circle called Hydra. The concept exists solely within Marvel's fictional universe, particularly in Captain America and Avengers storylines.

In fact, the word "Hydra" has a very different historical association. Operation Hydra was the code name for a 1943 Royal Air Force bombing mission targeting Germany's rocket research facility at Peenemünde during World War II.

History of political sparring

The latest statement by the former Chief Minister comes against the backdrop of an already tense relationship between Vijayan and Reddy.

The two leaders have repeatedly clashed over issues ranging from governance to the use of bulldozer-style enforcement measures. Their exchanges became particularly sharp during election campaigns, with both sides trading personal and political barbs.

At one stage, the war of words even took a pop-culture turn when Revanth Reddy invoked the famous "Po mone Dinesha" (Go away Dinesh, I know better than you) dialogue from the Malayalam movie Narasimham, a remark that drew a strong response from Vijayan.

With his latest intervention, the Kerala leader has once again escalated the confrontation, framing the issue as more than a personal dispute and warning that rhetoric invoking authoritarian figures carries wider implications for democratic society.
