Karnataka’s ode to democracy: 2500-km human chain covering all districts

Karnataka government joins hands with NGOs to commemorate International Democracy Day with a unique north-south human chain and a host of other events


The Karnataka government, along with civil society organisations, has planned a detailed event to commemorate International Democracy Day on Sunday (September 15).

2500-km human chain

The most-awaited event as part of the celebrations a 2,500-km human chain from Bidar in north to Chamarajanagar in the south, covering all 31 districts of the state. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is also expected to participate in it.

Around 25 lakh participants from various communities and backgrounds are expected to join hands for this massive human chain, which aims to emphasise Karnataka’s determined commitment to democratic principles globally.

What human chain will highlight

The participants in the human chain are also expected to carry banners and posters emphasizing the significance of democracy, equality, and liberty.

At the same time, the event will stress on the responsibilities of citizens, including the protection of the environment. The organisers have announced a tree-plantation drive, with 1 million saplings being planted across the state.

CM’s meet on mega event

Siddaramaiah has already chaired a preparatory meeting on the human chain and related events. “The forces that are trying to destroy democracy are small in number, but their activities are big. We must stand up to those out to finish democracy,” Siddaramaiah reportedly said at the meeting.

He asked his officials to ensure that the “unprecedented and historic” Bidar-Chamarajanagar human chain becomes a success. “I’ll join the human chain in front of Vidhana Soudha,” he said.

Focus on Preamble to Constitution

A special event will also be held in front of the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, where people will have the unique opportunity to get their own copies of the Preamble to the Constitution printed.

Besides, students visiting gram panchayat libraries (Arivu Centres) on World Democracy Day will recite the Preamble to the Constitution, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge has said.

Awards galore

Not only that, the event organisers have declared awards under five categories, including the district with the largest participation, best NGO participation, best cooperative society, best private company, and best innovation. Each category has three prizes.

Since the human chain will cover every district of the state, detailed planning and coordination are under way to ensure its success. In Dharwad, the chain will cover about 55 km, from Tegur in Belagavi district to Halyal, where those in Uttar Kannada district will join it.

Educating younger generation

Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu told the media that they were expecting some 1,000 participants for each kilometre and were in talks with various NGOs to boost participation.

Minister for Social Welfare HC Mahadevappa emphasised the importance of educating the younger generation about democracy and Constitutional values such as liberty, equality, and fraternity. He added that the International Democracy Day event would mark a significant milestone in the state’s continuing efforts to promote democratic education.
