Severe storms tore through Kansas, US, over the weekend, dumping more than six inches of rain across several parts of the state and triggering dangerous flash floods that swept away vehicles and left roads submerged within hours.

Among those caught in the deluge was 33-year-old Venkatesh Doppalapudi, an Indian IT professional and student from Andhra Pradesh who lived in Omaha, Nebraska, and held an H-1B visa. He was driving to Houston on June 27 afternoon when the rising waters overtook his car.

Eyewitnesses reportedly told emergency responders in Sumner County that they saw his vehicle go under near a bridge, with Doppalapudi still trapped inside. The current was so strong that rescue teams on the scene were unable to enter the water to reach him in time.
