4% quota for differently abled in TN teacher recruitment is back

Four per cent quota for people with disabilities in Tamil Nadu teachers recruitment is back.

The Tamil Nadu Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) issued the notification for the reservation and enabling recruitment of those with more than 70 per cent disability on June 12, three years after the quota for differently abled was raised to 4 per cent from 3 per cent as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act 2016.

The notification came following a contempt of court plea was filed against the Board in the Madras High Court by Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled & Caregivers (TARATDAC).

However, the Board told the court on June 14 that they had issued the notification two days earlier.

Speaking to The Federal, B Jansi Rani, state president, TARATDAC, said the new notification will now help persons with more than 70 per cent disability to also apply for the positions.

In 2017, the TRB had sought to hire 3,456 post graduate teachers, with only 3 per cent reservation for the disabled. It had also limited the eligibility to those having 40-70 per cent disability.

The TARATDAC strongly opposed this and filed a case against the TRB in 2017, following which the HC asked the Board to reserve 140 seats for the disabled. In another hearing in December 2017, the court ordered issuance of notification within six months. When this was not done, the TARATDAC filed the contempt case. The notification came before the court could rule on the contempt case, following which the court closed the case.
