COVID-19: TN registers highest single-day spike with 1,438 cases

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Tamil Nadu crossed 28,000 on Friday (June 5) as the state registered the highest single-day spike of 1,438 cases. Chennai alone accounted for 1,116 cases with the capital city’s tally touching a whopping 19,826.

Out of the total 28,694 cases, 12,697 are active ones, while 15,762 have got cured of the illness or discharged. The state has been reporting more than 1,000 cases for the sixth straight day. It also reported 12 deaths on June 5, raising the toll to 232.

The new positive cases include six returnees from Qatar, five from Dubai and one from Sri Lanka. While 14 had returned from Delhi, seven came from Maharashtra. As many as 861 people got discharged today from various hospitals on June 6.

A day after a 17-year-old girl and a 33-year-old post-natal mother had died at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai, a 44-year-old woman with chronic kidney disease and hypertension succumbed to the virus.

With the capital city registering an unabated spike in COVID- 19 cases, the Tamil Nadu government announced a group of five ministers to oversee work by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and the field support teams.

Of the 15 zones in the GCC, each minister has been assigned three zones and they would monitor the containment efforts by the corporation and the field support team, a government order said.

Adjoining Chengelpet and Tiruvallur districts cumulatively have 1,624 and 1,191 cases respectively. As many as 15,692 samples were tested today and totally 5,60,673 specimens have been examined. Tamil Nadu has 74 testing centres, including 44 in the government and 30 in the private sector.
