Everyone loves free stuff and there’s nothing quite like free booze. However, in Kerala’s Chalakkudy the residents of a residential building weren’t so happy to find liquor flowing through the taps of their houses on a Monday morning.

The foul-smelling mixture of water and liquor was reported to have somehow made its way in the pipelines of 18 houses of Solomon’s Avenue apartment near the KSRTC bus stand in Thrissur.

Upon investigation, the cause of the situation was traced back to the excise officials from Irinjalakuda.

Six years ago, Rachana Bar near the apartment was shut down and their liquor stock sealed by the excise department.

Now that the formalities related to the disposal of the liquor were done, after six years, the officials dug up a pit and emptied all the bottles one by one, disposing off 6,000 litres of beer and other spirits.

The pit was, however, very close to the apartment’s open well and hence, the liquor mixed with the water contaminating over 20,000 litres of drinking water.

After the residents complained to the Chalakudy police and Municipality, health officials conducted an examination confirming the presence of alcohol in the water.

Following the inspection, the excise department has been draining out water from the open well and cleaning it.

According to reports by Manorama, the owner of the bar has also agreed to bear the expenses of the water supplied to the apartment’s residents, until their well has been restored.

While the unusual situation proved to be a nuisance for the affected families, Tweeple had a rather light-hearted response with some making plan to shift to ‘God’s own country.’
