A 23-year-old man, who was seen in a viral video being forced to sing the national anthem along with four others, has reportedly succumbed to his injuries.

According to NDTV, the man has been identified as Faizan, a resident of northeast Delhi’s Kardampuri. He was declared death at Delhi’s Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital.

News reports quote Faizan’s family as alleging that the young men were later taken into police custody and beaten. “He was beaten with rods and his legs were broken,” his mother told NDTV.

In the video, police were seen forcing him and four other young men to sing the national anthem while they were lying down. It also showed a few police personnel in riot gear poking the victims with their batons and even pulling one of them by their hair.

At least 42 deaths have been reported so far in the communal violence that erupted in northeast Delhi following a clash between pro and anti-citizenship law protesters.
