Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, in his latest tweet on December 22, said that RSS members who endorse Hindutva are Hindus who have not read the Upanishads.

In a blatant tweet directed at the Sangh Parivar members, Tharoor added a snap of the Maha Upanishad verse which said, “Who discriminate ‘This one is a friend and that one a stranger’ are people with petty minds; people with evolved consciousness embrace the entire world as their own family.”

He added that if the RSS (Sangh) members were Hindu enough, they would have read the Upanishad verse which calls for unity without discriminating against anyone as a friend or a stranger. In a subtle barb, he indicated that people who hold ideologies and discriminate amongst people were petty minded.

The tweet comes amidst active protest in various parts of the country against the Citizenship Amendment Act makes religion the basis of citizenship.

In another tweet, he quoted on freedom by Thomas Sowell which read: “Freedom has cost too much blood and agony to be relinquished at the cheap price of rhetoric.”

Tharoor also participated in a protest rally against CAA in Kozhikode in Kerala on December 21. The Sahitya Akademi award-winning author has been regularly tweeting against the contentious legislation.
