Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday (June 8) took a swipe at Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his claim that India has successfully protected its borders under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Shah while addressing a virtual public rally in Bihar on Sunday (June 7), had said that the surgical strikes in Uri was proof of India’s solid defence policy and that the country comes third to USA and Israel in protecting its borders.

Tagging an ANI tweet, that had quoted Shah’s statement, Gandhi said “everyone knows what’s the reality at the borders,” in an apparent dig at the standoff with China in Ladakh.

“Everyone knows what’s the reality at the border, but let’s keep the heart happy with this (Shah’s) thought,” he tweeted.

“India’s defence policy has gained global acceptance. The whole world agrees that after USA & Israel if there is any other country that is able to protect its borders, it is India: Home Minister Amit Shah,” ANI had posted quoting an excerpt of Shah’s speech.

Gandhi’s criticism comes a day after the commanders of India and China’s defence forces held a high-level meeting to end the stand-off between the two countries along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. On Saturday Indian and Chinese ambassadors through a video conference had decided to effect an amicable handling of differences.

Reports on Monday, however, claimed that the Chinese Army has carried out a large-scale drill to ensure its preparedness in transporting soldiers and vehicles to the northwest border of the country.
