Junior docs in Kolkata call off strike, give govt time to act on demands

Agitating junior doctors in Kolkata on Monday evening (June 17) called off their protest after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accepted their demands and assured them to fulfil their demands. The agitating doctors have also decided to give the state government some time to act on their demands. While thanking all those who supported their protest, junior doctors of NRS Medical College at a press conference on Monday evening urged the public to refrain from assaulting healthcare professionals, however grim be the situation.

Ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi dies in court

Former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, who was removed from office in 2013 after widespread protests, reportedly died in court. He fainted after a court session, where he was facing espionage charges, and died after that, said a state TV. Morsi served as the fifth president of Egypt.

Familiar faces return to the 17th session of Lok Sabha

Some familiar faces, who were not part of the previous Lok Sabha, returned to the House taking oath as new members on Monday (June 17). These include former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, DMK’s top guns Dayanidhi Maran, A Raja and T R Balu, senior Congress leader from Goa Francisco Sardinha and former Union minister Manish Tewari.

Six more children die in Muzaffarpur, toll rises to 103

Six children died on Monday (June 17) in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, taking the toll due to suspected case of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) to 103. According to a release issued by the district administration, 18 deaths were reported from Kejriwal hospital in the district and 85 from Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), where Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan had visited the patients on Sunday (June 16) and assured their families of all possible help from the Centre.

JP Nadda appointed BJP’s working president

Senior BJP leader and former Union minister JP Nadda was appointed as the party’s working president during a parliamentary board meeting on Monday (June 17). This was announced by former BJP president and defence minister Rajnath Singh after the party’s highest decision-making body’s meeting, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah. Shah will remain the party’s national president.

Army convoy targeted with IED blast in Pulwama, 4 personnel injured

Four security personnel were injured as terrorists on Monday targeted an Army convoy with an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. An Army Casper, a bullet and mine proof vehicle, of 44 Rashtriya Rifles was targeted by the IED explosion near Eidgah Arihal on the Arihal-Lassipora road in the south Kashmir’s district, a police official said.

Coimbatore police may have just averted a massacre akin to the one perpetrated by the ISIS in Sri Lanka in May. While the police on June 15 arrested three people with suspected links to ISIS in Coimbatore, the FIR copy has revealed that the trio had planned to launch suicide bombings at crowded places including temples and churches in the city.

TN Water Crisis: Oppn parties claim on social media don’t reflect reality
