Corruption: AAP puts Congress, BJP in same league

The Aam Admi Party (AAP) has blamed both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for corruption in the country.

The party-with-a-difference, as its tallest leader Arvind Kejriwal would like to call it, put a tweet on AAP’s official Twitter handle on Tuesday, suggesting that the BJP had merely replaced the Congress in “looting our country” while the latter had gone into oblivion after losing power in 2014. What it essentially wanted to convey is that the two parties are no different and have an equally tainted past and present when it came to matters of corruption.

The tweet made the headlines a day after AAP founder and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal attacked the two national parties over three new farm laws that were passed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in Parliament last month and which had resulted in protests across the country.

“We want a complete rollback of the three laws. It is non-negotiable,” Kejriwal said on Monday during a protest event at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. He was addressing AAP workers from Punjab where the anger against the new laws has been particularly severe.

Taking potshots at Congress, Kejriwal said, “When the bill was being prepared, a leader of the national party was present in the committee and he congratulated the BJP for making the law, and made sure that the bill got passed. When it was passed, they started protesting against it. Are people stupid?”

Despite all the protest against the new farm laws, Prime Minister Modi has consistently maintained that the new laws will ensure better opportunities for farmers and usher in new technologies in agriculture. Farmers, especially those from Punjab and Haryana, are not impressed though as they continue to protest against the government’s refusal to give them MSP as a legal guarantee.
