Back in Oscars race? RRR applies for Academy Awards in general category

It’s not too late for S Rajamouli’s epic action drama RRR to join the Oscar race. In what came as a surprising news for fans, makers of RRR have announced that the team has applied in all major categories for the 95^th Academy Awards next year.

The team which launched its Oscar campaign with a screening of the mega budget film at the Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles last week, in a tweet has shared that the movie has been submitted in the general category for the Oscars.

“We are honoured that RRR’s overwhelming success represented Indian Cinema on the global stage by creating milestones at the worldwide box office and uniting film buffs across the world by transcending linguistic and cultural barriers. We’re grateful to each and every one who loved our film and cheered us over the past few months. You made this journey possible. We applied to The Academy for Oscars consideration in the general category. We wish our RRR family the best and thank them from the bottom of our hearts for making this possible. Here’s to continuing to win hearts and entertain audiences worldwide,” a note shared by the RRR team on Twitter said.

According to Indian Express, the makers have submitted names in major categories including Best Picture (DVV Danayya), Best Director (Rajamouli), Best Actor (Junior NTR and Ram Charan), Best Actress (Alia Bhatt) and Best Supporting Actor (Ajay Devgn). Submissions have also been made in the screenplay, visual effects, sound, score, editing and production design categories. The song ‘Naatu Naatu’ has been submitted in the Best Original Song category.

Originally shot in Telugu, the film starring Junior NTR and Ram Charan raked in around ₹550 crore at the box office, surpassing that of Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2, and grossed ₹1,150-1,200 crore worldwide. The film received rave reviews from critics both at home and abroad and has a 92 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Set in pre-Independence India, the film revolves round the characters of Alluri Seetharamaraju and Komaram Bheem, two freedom fighters and their rebellion against the British. Packed with high octane fighting scenes and foot-tapping music, the film since its release on March 24 has led to jam-packed theatres across the globe.

Fans were left dejected when Gujarati film Chello Show was chosen as India’s official entry to next year’s Oscars, but the latest news is proof that RRR may have just redeemed itself.
