AAP leads in constituencies where traders were hit by sealing

The trading community in Delhi which form a sizeable number has surprisingly remained with Arvind Kejriwal’s Aaam Aadmi Party this election too. In the last two years, thousands of shops were sealed following orders from a Supreme Court appointed monitoring committee.

Sadar Bazar: As of 12 noon, in Sadar Bazar, the largest wholesale market of household items in Delhi, AAP’s sitting MLA Som Dutt is leading against BJP’s Jai Prakash.

Chandni Chowk: Considered one of the most hard-fought contests in the Delhi assembly polls, Chandi Chowk is between AAP’s Prahlad Singh Sawhney, BJP’s Suman Kumar Gupta and Congress’ Alka Lamba. Located in Old Delhi, Chandni Chowk is a busy shopping area with spice market, silver jewelry. Currently, Sawhney is leading the race.

Karol Bagh: Another trading hub, Karol Bagh located in Central Delhi has AAP’s Vishesh Ravi leading by over 10,000 votes against BJP’s Yogender Chandoliya. The constituency saw a 60.44% turnout.

Jangpura: Located in South Delhi, the constituency houses the iconic Lajpat Nagar market where hundreds of shops were sealed. Jangpura has an estimated Scheduled Caste population of 17.71%. Much of the electorate in this constituency are categoried as those from the Upper Income Group. In the 2020 elections, there were a total of 1,46,334 eligible electors, of which 80,062 were male, 66,266 female and 6 voters of the third gender. Currently AAP’s Praveen Kumar is leading against Congress’ Tarvinder Singh Marwah.
