Delhi logs record 8K-plus COVID cases in 24 hours; India’s tally at 86,83,916

India logged 47,905 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday (November 12), which took its caseload to 86,83,916, even as Delhi recorded its highest single-day spike amid concerns the state may soon run out of hospital beds for patients.

The death toll mounted to 1,28,121 with 550 new deaths being recorded on Thursday.

Around 80,66,501 people have recovered from the disease so far, pushing the national recovery rate to 92.89 per cent. The COVID-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.48 per cent.

The number of active cases remained below 5 lakh for the second consecutive day. There are 4,89,294  active cases of coronavirus infection in the country as on date which comprises 5.63 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.

Thursday, however, saw Delhi recording 8,593 cases, the biggest single-day spike so far. The total number of cases now stands at 4,59,975 while the number of active cases is 42,629.

The rise in cases comes in the backdrop of the festive season.

Observing that the national capital is observing a bigger daily spike than states like Maharashtra and Kerala, the Delhi High Court recently censured the Arvind Kejriwal government, asking it what actions have been taken to control the spread of the disease.

Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya and Goa have reported a higher positivity rate. Union health Harsh Vardhan spoke to chief ministers, state health ministers, principal secretaries and additional chief secretaries of the seven states to discuss mitigation measures.

The minister asked authorities to focus on effective clinical management of COVID-19 cases to reduce deaths in the first 24, 48 or 72 hours.

The ICMR has said a total of 12,19,62,509 samples have been tested across the country for COVID-19 till November 11.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23 and 40 lakh on September 5.  It went past  50 lakh on September 16,  60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11 and crossed 80 lakh on October 29.  According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 12,19,62,509    samples have been tested up to November 11 with 11,93,358  samples being tested on Wednesday.
