A Delhi Police constable has been suspended after he was seen tipping over vegetable carts in the national capital during the lockdown imposed due to the coronavirus outbreak, reported NDTV.

The constable, identified as Rajbir, was caught on camera bullying vegetable sellers for allegedly violating the lockdown. He was suspended after the video was widely circulated on social media, said the report.

He was seen in plain clothes and holding a stick, going from cart to cart and tipping them over, leaving the vegetables scattered on the road. The incident reportedly occurred in central Delhi’s Ranjit Nagar on March 25.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a “total lockdown” for 21 days from March 24 midnight to break the chain of transmission of COVID-19. But essential items including food items and vegetables were allowed to be sold.

However, due to a confusion over what services are allowed to continue, police personnel have often targeted the vendors.

Besides, allegations of police brutality have also come to the fore. Videos are being widely circulated showing police personnel thrashing or making people carry out punishments, like squatting or crawling, for allegedly violating the lockdown in several places like UP’s Badaun and Karnataka’s Belgaum.

So far, 16 people have died due to the coronavirus infection and 694 confirmed cases have been reported in India.
