12 states conducting more COVID tests than national average: Govt

The World Health Organization (WHO) has advised 140 COVID-19 tests per day per million population. And, in India, the national average is 844 per million. However, 12 states are performing tests more than national average and 35 have exceeded the WHO mark, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) data has shown.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has advised 140 COVID-19 tests per day per million population. And, in India, the national average is 844 per million. However, 12 states are performing tests more than the national average and 35 have exceeded the WHO mark, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) data has shown.

On Friday (October 30), the ministry shared the data of testing per million in the states and Kerala (3,258) is on top followed by Delhi (3,225) and Karnataka (1,550).

“India has performed remarkably on fulfilling WHO’s advise of 140 tests/day/ million population. In its Guidance Note on ‘Public Health Criteria to Adjust Public Health and Social Measures in the Context of COVID-19’ WHO has advised this strategy for comprehensive surveillance for suspected cases,” the health ministry said.

“In another row of achievements, 35 States/UTs have exceeded the advised number of tests. The national average of tests per day per million population stands at 844. The figure for Delhi and Kerala has exceeded 3,000,” it added.

The other states/Union Territories testing more than the national average are Andhra Pradesh (1,418), Bihar (1,093), Odisha (1,072), Goa (1,058), Jharkhand (994), Jammu and Kashmir (984), Telangana (947), Tamil Nadu (936), and Haryana (863).

Meanwhile, there were 48,648 fresh COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours and the country’s caseload rose to 81,37,119 on Saturday (October 31). The number of recoveries crossed the 74-lakh mark, pushing the recovery rate to 91.34 per cent, according to the health ministry data.

The death toll due to COVID is 1,21,641 with 551 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.

A total of 74,32,829 people have recuperated from COVID-19 so far, taking the national recovery rate to 91.34 per cent. The case fatality rate has dropped to 1.49 per cent.

The number of active COVID-19 cases remained below 6 lakh for the second consecutive day.
