An under-construction building collapsed in Bengaluru’s Babusapalya amid heavy rain on Tuesday (October 22), killing one worker and trapping some 20 people, 14 of whom have been rescued. Five are still missing.

The incident came as rain wreaked havoc in the Karnataka capital, with large parts of the city being flooded, particularly in the north. Two children were feared drowned and flights were disrupted.

On Wednesday, all schools will be closed as the IMD forecast more rain for the tech city.

Entire building collapses

The seven-storey building collapsed on Tuesday when the city was receiving another spell of downpour, officials told news agency PTI.

Two rescue vans from the fire and emergency department were pressed into rescue operations.

“Some 20 people were trapped. One body has been recovered, 14 workers have been rescued, and five are still missing,” D Devaraja, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Bengaluru) told the media.

According to preliminary inquiry, the entire building collapsed, trapping those 20 people underneath, a fire department official said.
