Parliament LIVE | INDIA bloc to Modi: 'The more you try to crush us, the more we will rise'
"When all unite, Narendra Modi won't be able to do anything... We are fighting unitedly to save the country and democracy," Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said.
Leaders from the INDIA bloc converged at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Friday (December 22) to stage a protest against the suspension of 146 MPs during the Winter Session of Parliament. The Opposition parties said they are resorting to the protest to save democracy in the country.
The MPs were suspended for “causing disruptions” to the functioning of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and raising slogans while demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on December 13 Parliament security breach. Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, party president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh and NCP chief Sharad Pawar were among the key leaders present at Jantar Mantar. Apart from them, two dozen Opposition MPs, including Jairam Ramesh, Manoj Jha A Raja, Gaurav Gogoi, Mukul Wasnik, A Raja and Naseer Hussain were also present.
Addressing the protest, RJD MP Manoj Jha said, “The ruling dispensation wants an Opposition mukt parliament and a question mukt press. The soul of India is in the ICU. They control Kashmir's normalcy from Delhi but the reality is Kashmir is not okay.”
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, “In the history of democracy in the world, 146 MPs have never been suspended... People should know that the democracy is in danger. The protest is to tell the people that whatever is happening is wrong for the future of the country... There is only one solution, people should change this government and bring the INDIA alliance into power.”
Senior CPI leader D Raja said, “This government cannot murder the democracy as it is doing now and it cannot rule the country anymore.” He said, “Opposition is important for Parliament. But they are killing the Opposition, this is fascism. Can we afford this fascist dictatorship? The INDIA bloc should fight together and defeat the BJP. Constitution and democracy must be saved...it is under attack.”

The Opposition INDIA bloc on Friday staged a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi against the suspension of 146 MPs from the two Houses of Parliament during the Winter session and called on people to unite to save democracy in the country.
The protest, which was organised under the banner of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Rahul Gandhi and leaders of Left parties, DMK, NCP, SP, NC, TMC, JMM, RJD and other members of the opposition coalition.
Addressing the gathering, Kharge said the leaders of INDIA parties have come together as democracy is under threat under the BJP government.
"When all unite, Narendra Modi won't be able to do anything... The more you try to crush us, the more we will rise. We are fighting unitedly to save the country and democracy," he said.
Gandhi said opposition members were suspended from the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha for demanding answers from Home Minister Amit Shah on the December 13 Parliament security breach issue.
"The more hatred the BJP spreads, the more love and brotherhood INDIA parties will spread," he said.
"By shunting out 150 MPs from the Parliament, the government has shut out the voice of 60 per cent Indians," he said.
NCP leader Sharad Pawar, CPI-M's Sitaram Yechury, CPI's D Raja, JMM's Mahua Maji, DMK's Tiruchi Siva, RJD's Manoj Kumar Jha, TMC's Mausam Noor, NC's Hasnain Masoodi, Revolutionary Socialist Party's N K Premachandran and SP's S T Hasan were among the leaders present at the protest.
Rendering the House dysfunctional by making a demand to the Chair that cannot be acceded is unfortunate and against public interest, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar is learnt to have said in a letter to Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge.
Dhankhar has written to Kharge stating that the Congress leader's refusal to meet him during the Winter session of Parliament was not in sync with parliamentary practices and has also sought an interaction with him, sources said on Friday.
This comes a day after the Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die on Thursday, a day ahead of schedule.
The Upper House witnessed repeated protests by opposition MPs who were demanding a discussion on the December 13 Parliament security breach and a statement by Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue. The protests led to the suspension of 46 MPs from the House for the session. A breach of privilege notice was moved against Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien and the matter was referred to the Privileges Committee.
Citing the letter, the sources said Dhankhar expressed "pain" that his efforts to hold a meeting with Kharge to ensure smooth functioning of the House could not find the Congress leader's favour.
Interaction with the presiding officer is of high priority as per the parliamentary mechanism, Dhankhar said. He also said that he looks forward to an interaction with the leader of opposition for a healthy way forward.
Adequate security arrangements were made near the Parliament and Jantar Mantar on Friday in view of the ongoing protest by INDIA bloc against suspension of MPs, an official said. Several security personnel have been deployed and barricades were also placed. A senior police officer said that adequate arrangements have been made and security personnel have been deployed for the smooth movement of traffic in the area.
"In the history of democracy in the world, 146 MPs have never been suspended... People should know that the democracy is in danger. The protest is to tell the people that whatever is happening is wrong for the future of the country... There is only one solution, people should change this government and bring the INDIA Alliance into power..." says Congress leader Shashi Tharoor.
