The Indian campaign in kurash ended without any medal at the Asian Games with Jyoti Tokas and Yash Kumar Chauhan enduring one-sided losses in their respective quarterfinals on Monday.

Chauhan’s men’s 90kg bout against Sadegh Azarang failed to last the distance as the Iranian inflicted a “khalol” — comprehensive victory with 10 points — to secure a 10-0 win.

The bout is stopped midway if there’s a “khalol” by one of the opponents. The arbitrator announces the ‘appraisal in case if the throw on back is done by a beautiful and accurate motion”.

Earlier, in the women’s 87kg quarterfinal, Jyoti was no match for her Iranian opponent Melika Omid Vandchaly, who won 3-0 securing three “chala”.

Chala is a minor throw down on the opponent that garners one point.

A dominant Melika started off with a “chala” on Jyoti with a subtle attack on the Indian’s legs.

There was no stopping the Iranian who secured two more ‘chalas” to race to 3-0 lead with the four-minute clock ticking away.

India’s canoers and kayakers endured a disappointing outing as none of them managed to secure a podium finish despite featuring in four finals.

Niraj Verma finished seventh in the men’s single canoe 1000m with a timing of 4:36.314s.

The Indian team of Ribason Singh Ningthoujam and Philem Gyaneshwor Singh finished eighth in the men's canoe double 500m final, clocking 1:54.723s.

The Indian women’s teams finished last in the kayak double 500m and canoe double 500m finals.

While the duo of Binita Chanu Oinam and Parvathy Geetha clocked 2:07.440s in the kayak double 500m, Megha Pradeep logged 2:17.614s in the canoe double 500m. (PTI)

The Indian recurve mixed pair archery duo of Atanu Das and Ankita Bhakat showed tenacity to defeat Malayasia in a three-setter and sail into quarterfinals at the Asian Games on Monday.

Indian archers stormed into last-eight in three team events — recurve mixed, compound mixed, compound men’s team — when the elimination round got underway.

As of now, India are in medal contention in four events with the top-seeded women’s team compound archers getting a bye into the quarters.

Fifth seeded Indian duo of Das and Ankita rallied to beat Malaysian team of Syaqiera Binti Mashayikh, Muhamad Zarif Syahir Bin Zolkepeli 6-2 (39-38, 37-36, 39-33).

Should they overcome the Indonesian challenge, the Indians may run into the top-seeded Koreans in potential semifinal clash in Olympic-qualifying event.

In the compound mixed team, top-seeded Indian duo of Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam dropped just one point from 16 arrows to eliminate UAE’s Amna Alawadhi and Mohammed Binamro 159-151.

The duo will take on formidable Malaysia (No 8 seed) in the quarters and thereafter they have an easy draw till the final.

In the compound men’s team event, second-seeded Indians trio of Ojas, Abhishek Verma and Prathamesh Jawkar thrashed 15th seed Singapore (Woon Teng NG, Lee Chung Hee Alan, Jun Hui Goh) 235-219.

The compound men’s team is now pitted against lower-ranked Bhutan in the quarters and will have a potential semifinal clash against third seeded Chinese Taipei.

The top-seeded Indian women’s compound team of Jyothi, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur, who got a bye into the quarters, will open its campaign against ninth-seeded Hong Kong who ousted Bangladesh 225-218. (PTI)

Indian riders had a disappointing time in the equestrian team and individual jumping final as they lost out on the medal race to finish at the last position at the 2023 Asian Games.

With total penalties of 1077.20 — far greater than any of the competitors in the discipline — the Indian team finished at the fifth and the last spot in the discipline as China claimed the gold medal with total penalties of 86.80.

Japan took the silver with 92.70, while Thailand claimed the bronze medal with 93.90.

The Indian team comprised Vikas Kumar, Apurva Dabhade and Ashish Limaye, who was eliminated from the cross country on Saturday for missing two jumps during the event.

In the individual event, Vikas narrowly missed out on a place in the top three as he finished fourth with his horse Noreway Harry, earning total penalties of 32.40 in dressage and 8.80 in cross country.

Dabadhe was placed 12th with his horse Valtho Des Peupliers with 29.60 in total penalties in dressage and no points in cross country. (PTI)

Indian roller skaters bagged two bronze medals in men's and women's 3000m team relay events to match their best ever performance at the Asian Games on Monday.

The women's team of Sanjana Bathula, Karthika Jagadeeswaran, Heeral Sadhu and Aarathy Kasturi Raj opened India's account on the ninth day of competitions, finishing with a timing of 4:34.861s.

The Indian quartet finished behind gold medallists Chinese Taipei (4:19.447) and South Korea (4:21.146).

Aryanpal Singh Ghuman, Anandkumar Velkumar, Siddhant Kamble and Vikram Ingale then sealed a second bronze with a timing of 4:10.128 in men's team relay.

Chinese Taipei (4:05.692) and South Korea (4:05.702) took the top-two spots.

Indian roller skaters had won two bronze medals at the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games in men's free skating and pairs skating events. (PTI)
