Asian Games Live | Ancy Sojan wins women's long jump silver medal
India’s medals tally at the Asiad 2023 currently stands at 60, with 13 gold, 24 silver, and 23 bronze.
Indian roller skaters clinched two bronze medals in the men’s and women’s 3000m team relay events to match their best-ever performance at the Asian Games in China’s Hangzhou on Monday (October 2). Later in the day, Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee’s giant-slaying run also ended with a bronze medal.
With these, India’s medals tally at the Asiad 2023 stands at 56, with 13 gold, 21 silver, and 22 bronze.
The women’s team of Sanjana Bathula, Karthika Jagadeeswaran, Heeral Sadhu, and Aarathy Kasturi Raj opened India’s account on the ninth day of competitions. The Indian quartet finished behind gold medallists Chinese Taipei and South Korea.
Aryanpal Singh Ghuman, Anandkumar Velkumar, Siddhant Kamble, and Vikram Ingale then sealed a second bronze in men’s team relay. Chinese Taipei and South Korea took the top two spots.
Later in the day, Sutirtha and Ayhika lost the closely-fought women's doubles semifinal 3-4 to Korea.
In men’s decathlon, Tejaswin Shankar produced a season's best effort in shot put to be placed fifth in the overall standings with two events left.
He also produced a personal best effort of 11.12m to register a fourth-place finish in the 100m race, while topping the standings in long jump with an effort of 7.37m.
He is scheduled to participate in high jump and 400m race events later in the day.
On the other hand, Vithya Ramraj equalled PT Usha’s 400m hurdle national record, which was set in 1984, with a personal best effort of 55.42s to top her heat and directly qualify for the women’s final.
Ravi Sinchal Kaveram Theetharamada, however, missed out after finishing fifth in her heat.
In men’s 400m hurdles, Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan and Yashas Palaksha qualified for the final after finishing in second position in their respective heats.
Sandesh Jesse and Sarvesh Anil Kushare produced identical scores of 2.10m to qualify for men’s high jump final after finishing at the ninth place in the list of 12 best performers.
In men’s 800m heat, Mohammed Afsal Pulikkalakath finished at the top of his heat, while Krishnan Kumar was second in his heat. Both qualified for the finals.
The Indian recurve mixed-pair archery duo of Atanu Das and Ankita Bhakat defeated Malayasia in a three-setter and sailed into the quarterfinals.
Indian archers stormed into the last eight in three team events — recurve mixed, compound mixed, and compound men’s team.
As of now, India are in medal contention in four events with the top-seeded women’s team compound archers getting a bye into the quarters.
Indian riders had a disappointing time in the equestrian team and individual jumping final as they lost out on the medal race to finish at the last position.
Indian canoers and kayakers also endured a disappointing outing as none of them managed to secure a podium finish despite featuring in four finals.
The Indian campaign in kurash also ended without any medal at the Asian Games.

Women's basketball: India bow out in quarterfinals
The Indian women's basketball team lost 57-96 against Noth Korea to bow out in the quarterfinals of the Asian Games.
The Indian women cagers were no match for North Korea as they lost all the four quarters 20-26, 6-26, 17-22, 14-22 at the Shaoxing Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium.
The Indians started impressively and gave North Korea a fight in the first quarter but were completely outplayed in the remaining three quarters. Earlier, India finished second in Group A, beating Indonesia 66-46, Mongolia 68-62 before losing 53-111 against defending champions China.
North Korea will play China in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Indian women's kabaddi team held to a draw by Chinese Taipei
In an unexpected start to its campaign, the Indian women's kabaddi team was on Monday held to a surprise 34-34 draw by Chinese Taipei in a Group A match.
The Indians were made to work hard throughout the contest by their opponents, who earned a bonus point on the last raid of the match to force a draw.
The women's side's next assignment will be against South Korea on Tuesday, while the men's team will take on Bangladesh in their Group A match.
India team official V. Tejaswini Bai attributed the draw to nervousness and asserted that her girls will win gold.

Hockey: Indian men enter semis
The Indian Men's Hockey Team on Monday qualified for the semi-final round with a 12-0 win over Bangladesh. With five wins in all their five Pool stage matches, India ended the Pool stage as table toppers.
Harmanpreet Singh (2', 4', 32'), and Mandeep Singh (18', 24', 46) scored hat-tricks each, while Abhishek (41', 57) scored a brace for India. Lalit Kumar Upadhyay (23'), Amit Rohidas (28'), Nilakanta Sharma (47'), and Gurjant Singh (56') also scored a goal each to help India get the win against Bangladesh.

Joshna stunned by lower ranked player
Star Indian squash player Joshna Chinappa made a shock exit from the women's singles event after losing 1-3 to lower-ranked Heo Mingyeong of South Korea in the pre-quarterfinals.
The 37-year-old, who received a first round bye, went down 4-11 12-10 9-11 8-11 in 37 minutes to the South Korean, ranked 158th, in the round of 16.
The result is a major upset as Joshna was a medal favourite. The Chennai player had won a singles bronze in the 2018 edition.
She also has two silvers and as many bronze in team events the Asian Games, including the one she picked up in this edition last week. She has been hit by injuries recently and lack of game time has pushed Joshna to as low as 70 in the world rankings.
The other Indian in the fray, Tanvi Khanna progressed to the quarterfinals with an easy 11-1 11-3 11-2 win over Arichaya Chujit of Thailand. The Indian mixed doubled pair of Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh continued its winning run to enhance its chances of making the quarterfinal. The duo cruised to 2-0 (11-5 11-6) win over Thailand's Anantana Prasertratanakul and Arkaradet Arkarahirunya to stay on top of group D.

Srikanth, Satwik-Chirag enter second round
India's Kidambi Srikanth progressed to the men's singles second round with a comfortable straight-game win over Vietnam's Phat Le Duc in the badminton competition.
Srikanth, a 2021 world championships silver medallist, outclassed Le Duc 21-10 21-10 in 29 minutes to set up a clash with Korea's Lee Yun Gyu.
Commonwealth Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also sailed into the men's doubles pre-quarterfinals with a 21-11 21-16 win over Hong Kong's Chow Hin Long and Lui Chun Wai.
The Indian duo, ranked world no. 3, will next face Indonesia's Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin.
In mixed doubles, K Sai Pratheek and Tanisha Crasto prevailed 21-18 21-14 over Macau's Leong Iok Chong and Weng Chi NG to make a winning start.

Sutirtha-Ayhika settle for bronze
Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee’s giant-slaying run ended with a bronze medal at the Asian Games after the Indian duo lost the closely-fought women's doubles semifinal 3-4 to Korea.
Sutirtha and Ayhika brought the match on even-keel after trailing 2-3 but the Koreans Sugyong Pak and Suyog Cha outgunned the Indians in the decider, winning 7-11 11-8 7-11 11-8 11-9 5-11 11-2 in 60 minutes.
The match ended when Sutirtha’s forehand crashed on the net.
Sutirtha and Ayhika had shocked the reigning world champion Chinese pair of Chen Meng and Yidi Wang in the quarterfinals.
With this defeat in the women’s doubles, India’s table tennis campaign ended at the Games. This is the only TT medal that India won at this edition of the Games. (PTI)

Vithya equals PT Usha's national record
Indian athletes had a good outing on Monday with Vithya Ramraj equalling PT Usha’s 400m hurdle national record, which was set in 1984, with a personal best effort of 55.42s to top her heat and directly qualify for the women’s final.
Ravi Sinchal Kaveram Theetharamada, however, missed out after finishing fifth in her heat with an effort of 58.62s.
In men’s 400m hurdles, Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan and Yashas Palaksha qualified for the final after finishing in second position with a timing of 49.28s and 49.61s in their respective heats.
Tejaswin Shankar produced a season’s best effort in shot put to be placed fifth in the overall standings with two events left in men’s decathlon.
The 24-year-old, who had won a bronze at the Commonwealth Games in high jump last year, came up with an effort of 13.39m in shot put to be at the fifth place.
He also produced a personal best effort of 11.12m to register a fourth-place finish in the 100m race, while topping the standings in long jump with an effort of 7.37m.
Tejaswin now has 2428 points in the overall standings. He amassed 903 points from long jump, 834 from 100m race and 691 in shot put.
He will participate in high jump and 400 race events later in the day.
