Kamal Haasan to contest from Coimbatore South Constituency

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan will contest the Tamil Nadu assembly polls from the Coimbatore South constituency, currently held by the AIADMK. Haasan announced the same while releasing his party’s second list of candidates on Friday (March 12).

Amman K Arjunan is the current legislator of the constituency. It was earlier speculated that Haasan may contest the polls from the Alandur constituency in Chennai, a seat held by former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran for nine years.

Dr Subha Charles (Kanyakumari), Dr R Mahendran (Singanallur), Dr Santosh Babu (Velacherry), Pazha Karupiah (T Nagar) and Sharad Babu (Alandur) are some of the candidates who have been nominated by the party in the second list.

The MNM had released its first list of 70 candidates on Wednesday. Nine of them are women.

The party has formed an alliance with All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi headed by actor-politician Sarathkumar and Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi. While MNM will contest in 154 seats, the allies have been given 40 seats each for the 234-member Assembly constituencies.

“The parties have committed to the common goal of transforming Tamil Nadu by fulfilling the long-pending aspirations of the people. With the common agenda of restoring the pride and glory of Tamil Nadu, they have decided to embark on a long-lasting journey together,” a document released by the party said.

The party had secured 4 per cent of the votes in the Lok Sabha polls in 2019.

Tamil Nadu goes to polls on April 6 while the counting of votes will take place on May 2.
