COVID-19: Tamil Nadu crosses 2,000-mark with 121 fresh cases

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Tamil Nadu crossed the 2,000-mark after 121 more people tested positive for the contagion on Tuesday (April 28), said authorities. Besides, a death was also reported in Chennai on Tuesday. Of the 121 new cases, 103 are from Chennai.

Of the 121 new cases, 103 are from Chennai. This comes amid a total lockdown announced by the state government in its major cities. With these recent developments, the statewide figures now stand at 2,058 cases and 25 deaths.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, chairing a review meeting of top officials at the Secretariat, said coronavirus cases in the state was on the rise as people have a casual attitude towards norms like social distancing and do not understand the gravity of the contagion.

A government bulletin said the 68-year-old man was admitted in a private hospital and died of COVID-19. A total of 121 people tested positive while the total number of infected so far stood at 2,058. This included as many as 120 children below the age of 12.

Among the newly infected was a five-day-old baby girl, two police personnel and a flower vendor at Chennai’s Koyambedu wholesale market. The two cops were attached to the Nungambakkam police station, said an official.

Of the total 2,058 cases in the state, as many as 1,138 people were discharged while the rest are under treatment at hospitals across the state. According to the health department, as many as 30,692 people are in home quarantine while 47 are in institutionalised facilities.
