Two students, involved in a violent clash and seen on a viral video brandishing weapons, running in and out of an MTC bus in Chennai, have been suspended by their college.
Arunmozhi Selvan, principal of Pachaiyappa’s College said the students who were involved in the clash have been “suspended with immediate effect, pending inquiry”.
“The management and the police department will take necessary action against the students who bring weapons to college,” he said.
Selvan said the college will also conduct counselling for all the students, especially those who engage in clashes. College faculty have formed a group to monitor the students’ activities.
The move comes after a video surfaced online showing six students chasing each other with weapons in Arumbakkam. Two of the students were injured in the clash.
According to reports, the clash was a fallout of a fight between two groups trying to prove they would be the head of a bus route — Route Thala, a titular role that is considered a privilege among students of certain colleges in Chennai.
Four of the students are on the run and two were arrested by police. The reason for the gang fight is anticipated to be over leadership.
