‘Give us grandchild within a year or pay ₹5 crore’: Parents sue son, daughter-in-law

Parents pressuring newly-weds to have children is not unheard of. But, an elderly couple in Uttarakhand have taken it a notch higher by suing their son and daughter-in-law, asking them either to have a child within a year or pay a compensation of ₹5 crore.

Speaking to the media, the petitioner SR Prasad, a resident of Haridwar said that he had sponsored his son’s education, his training in America and got him married in the hope of having grandchildren. He said while the expenses over his child’s education and marriage has left him without money or support, his and his wife’s wish to become grandparents has also remained unfulfilled.

“I gave my son all my money, got him trained in America. I don’t have any money now. We have taken a loan from bank to build home. We’re troubled financially and personally. We have demanded ₹2.5 crore each from both my son and daughter-in-law in our petition,” ANI quoted Prasad as saying.

“We got them married in 2016 in the hopes of having grandchildren. We didn’t care about gender, we just wanted a grandchild,” he said.

Prasad’s lawyer AK Srivastava said the couple’s plight reflected that of millions of elderly parents today.

“We invest in our children, make them capable of working in good firms. Children owe their parents basic financial care. The parents have demanded either a grandchild within a year or compensation of ₹5 crore,” Srivastava.
