Love everything about India: 'harassed' Japanese woman tweets on Holi incident

A Japanese woman who was groped and harassed by a group of men in Delhi during Holi celebrations on Wednesday (March 8), has now described the horrifying incident as “unfortunate” and said she loved India.

In her most recent tweet, the Japanese woman expressed her love for India and said that she loves everything about India and she has been here many times and it is a fascinating country. “India and Japan will forever be ‘Tomodachi’ (friends),” she said, probably going through a Medusa complex, in which the victim of a sexual assault is shamed and judged by an invisible people’s court, just as it happened in the case of the Greek mythical character, Medusa.

After leaving India, the woman tweeted in Japanese that she had heard that it was very dangerous for a woman to step out alone during the daytime at the Holi festival, an Indian festival that she had participated in. So, she claimed that she had participated in the event with a total of 35 other friends.

A video of the incident, shot in Paharganj area, showed a group of men smearing colour on the woman, who appeared uncomfortable. It also showed one of them smashing an egg on her head. The video, which the Japanese woman had tweeted about on Thursday, had gone viral on social media.

However, “terrified” by the reactions to the video, she had “deleted the tweet.” She said that on March 9, she had tweeted a video of Holi, but after the number of retweets and direct messages (DMs) went up dramatically, much more than she had imagined, she got terrified and deleted the tweet.

Three people, including a juvenile, who are residents of the area near Paharganj, have been detained in connection with the incident so far. They have also confessed that they were involved in the incident, police said.

The girl was staying at a hotel in Paharganj before leaving for Bangladesh on Friday.
