BJP sweeps Guwahati municipal polls, AAP makes a break amid Congress rout

The BJP and its local ally in Assam, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), swept the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections, winning 58 out of the total 60 seats, with the BJP winning 52 wards while the AGP securing six.

The BJP had won three wards unopposed. And 57 others went to vote on Friday, of which the BJP and AGP won 49 and six, respectively.

The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) bagged one seat each. The the state’s second-largest party and primary opposition of BJP, Congress failed to score.

The Congress contested 54 wards, the AJP 25, AAP 38 and the CPI(M) four.

The Assam State Election Commission had said that the polls saw a voting percentage was 52.8 per cent.

AAP’s electoral foray in Assam is said to be significant, especially amid a Congress rout. The party had gotten two surprise victories in the civic body polls in Upper Assam last month. With no opposition in Assam, the AAP hopes to fill the vacuum created by Congress.

“Our candidates went door-to-door addressing issues such as drinking water, floods in Guwahati,” Bhaben Choudhury, AAP’s state coordinator was quoted as saying in the Indian Express, adding, “In Guwahati, we have followed a well-planned campaign.”
