Sindhu, Praneeth, Rankireddy-Shetty win China Open first round


India’s newly crowned world champion PV Sindhu beats former Olympic Champion Li Xuerui in the opener round of China Open in Changzhou (China) on Wednesday (September 18).

The 24-year-old advanced to the second round with a 21-18, 21-12  win over her Chinese rival.

This the first time Sindhu has won against the Chinese in two straight games as all her earlier three consecutive wins against Xuerui has been in three games.

Earlier in the day, Saina Nehwal crashed out of the last Super 1000 tournament of World tour after facing a 10-21, 17-21 defeat by World no. 19 in a match that lasted 44 minutes.

However, B Sai Praneeth reached the round 16 in men’s singles at the following a 21-19, 21-23, 21-14 win over Thailand’s Suppanya Avihingsanon.

Indian men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the round 2 after a comfortable 21-7, 21-18 win over Canadian Jason & Nyl Yakura. Next, they will take on World no. 4 Japanese duo.

In the mixed doubles category, Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy missed a game point in the second game to lose 21-12, 23-21 against Germany’s Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich.
The Indian contingent later on Wednesday will see Parupalli Kashyap in men’s singles, women’s doubles pair Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy and men’s doubles duo Manu Atri and Sumeeth Reddy in action to stay in the tournament.
