'Vijay Mallya chor hai' slurs greets liqour baron at Oval match

Nothing could have been more embarrassing for fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya, who had to face aggressive slurs as he was escorting his mother out from the The Oval stadium, where India handed over Australia their first defeat in the ongoing World Cup, on Sunday (June 9).

As Mallya and his mother were trying to leave the stadium, a crowd was seen shouting “chor hai, chor hai” (he is a thief) and the infamous slogan “gali gali mein shor hai, Vijay Mallya chor hai” (clamour is in the streets, Vijay Mallya is a thief) at the fugitive businessman, who is facing extradition to India for a fraud case to the tune of ₹9,000 crore.

“I’m making sure my mother does not get hurt,” Mallya said, as cricket fans started gathering at the spot. This led to brawl as the security personnel started heckling the fans and journalists present there.

Mallya was at The Oval, London for the India-Australia match, in which India beat Australia by 36 runs and won their second match in a row.

He could leave the stadium premises after around 10 minutes. Later, he tweeted a picture with his son Siddharth, saying, “Great to watch cricket with my son and even sweeter to see India’s emphatic victory over Australia. Congratulations to @imVkohli and his team”.
