US woman arrested for 'assaulting' burqa-clad doctor in Pune

A 43-year-old woman and resident of the United States has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a burqa-clad doctor in Pune on Sunday (September 2).

Police said the accused was suffering from mental disabilities and was undergoing treatment for the same.

The incident took place when the two women were shopping at the Clover Centre market, in Pune cantonment area. Seeing the 27-year-old doctor in a burqa, the US-based woman first asked her if she was a Muslim, and when the former affirmed, she started abusing her, said police. The doctor lodged a complaint following the assault.

“The US based woman questioned the doctor if she were a Muslim and when the victim replied in the affirmative, the 43-year-old started abusing her. She is prone to engaging in abusive behaviour. When our officials detained her, she abused them also,” police officials said.

The police have registered a non-cognisable offence under section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code against the offender.
