SC issues notice to EC on plea filed by Opposition parties


The Supreme Court on March 15 issued a notice to the Election Commission regarding the plea by 21 Opposition parties seeking direction that 50% EVM results are matched and crosschecked with VVPATs before results are declared in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi also asked the Election Commission to depute a senior officer to assist the court and posted the matter for next hearing on March 25. The opposition has been demanding a reversal to paper balloting after doubts about manipulation and tampering of EVMs came to light.
