Over 140 petitions against Citizenship Amendment Act to come up before SC

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court will take up over 140 petitions filed against the Citizenship Amendment Act on Wednesday.


A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court will take up over 140 petitions filed against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on Wednesday (January 21).

The court had on December 18, 2019, issued notice to the Centre on the petitions received till then. The court sought a response from the Centre through Attorney-General K.K. Venugopal.

Various petitions seek the annulment of the CAA and some seek the declaration of the act as unconstitutional. The country has been seeing widespread protests after the Centre passed the Act on December 12, 2019.

Opposition parties had stated that the Act makes religion the basis of citizenship and the very idea was against the basic tenets of the constitution.
