One-third of total COVID-19 cases in India reported in 10 days of June

The number of recoveries has exceeded the total COVID-19 active cases for the first time on Wednesday (June 10) even as India reported close to 10,000 new instances of the infection pushing the country's cumulative caseload to over 2.7 lakh.


The nationwide COVID-19 tally neared 2.8 lakh on Wednesday (June 10) with almost one-third of the total cases getting detected in just 10 days of June.

On a positive note, the number of recoveries has exceeded the total number of active COVID-19 cases for the first time on Wednesday even as India reported close to 10,000 new instances of the infection, the Union Health Ministry said.

The country’s death toll has also risen to 7,745, according to the health ministry data updated at 8 am.

The number of active cases in the country stands at 1,33,632 while 1,35,205 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, the ministry said.

10 days of June

Almost one-third of the total cases were detected in just 10 days of June. Since June 1, nearly 90,000 cases have been added to the countrywide tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases, while nearly one-third of the overall death toll has also been reported during these 10 days.

India’s first COVID-19 case was detected more than four months ago on January 30, but it took more than 100 days thereafter to reach the one-lakh mark on May 18.

However, the next one-lakh cases were added in just about a fortnight and the tally can hit the 3-lakh-mark this week itself at the current rate. More than 9,000 new cases have been emerging every day for over a week now.

Recovery and testing

As many as 5,991 patients were cured of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. “Thus, 48.9 per cent of the patients have recovered so far,” an official said.

As per the global evidence, 80 per cent of COVID cases are mild, while the remaining 20 per cent may develop complications which would require hospitalisation. Out of the hospitalized cases of COVID-19, only 5 per cent may require ICU care, the official said.

According to ICMR, a total of 50,61,332 samples have been tested till 9 AM, with 1,45,216 samples tested in the last 24 hours.

India currently is the fifth worst-hit nation by the COVID-19 pandemic after the US, Brazil, Russia, and the UK, according to data issued by the Johns Hopkins University.

Central teams to take charge

Central teams have been deputed to assist state health officials in reviewing the public health measures being undertaken to combat COVID-19 in six cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru, which are among the major contributors to India’s rising tally of coronavirus infections.

These teams will provide technical support and handhold the state health departments and municipal health officials for reviewing public health measures implemented for containment and management of COVID-19 outbreak in the six cities, the Union health ministry said.

The teams will visit these cities within the next one week to review public health measures being undertaken for COVID-19 and submit a daily report of activities undertaken in collaboration with the local administration there.

“They will inform them regarding any issue of urgent importance and also submit a report of its observations and suggestions before concluding the visit,” the ministry said.

On Tuesday (June 9), the ministry said that high-level multi-disciplinary central teams have been deployed in over 50 districts and municipal bodies spread across 15 states and UTs, witnessing a spurt in coronavirus cases, to assist local administrations in containment and management of COVID-19 outbreak there.

From the states

The COVID-19 cases in Mumbai have crossed 51,000, while the national capital has reported more than 31,000 cases. Ahmedabad has reported nearly 15,000 cases while Chennai has over 22,000 cases.

Delhi

Delhi recorded 1,501 fresh coronavirus cases on Wednesday, taking the COVID-19 tally in the city to over 32,000, and the death toll due to the disease mounted to 984, authorities said.

This is the second time when over 1,500 case have been reported in a day in Delhi. The highest spike in fresh cases — 1,513 — was recorded on June 3.

In a bulletin issued on Wednesday, the Delhi health department said, the death toll from coronavirus infection has risen to 984, and the total number of cases mounted to 32,810.

A total of 79 fatalities were reported on June 9, which took place between May 20 and June 8. Of this, 39 deaths took place on June 7 and 20 on June 6, the bulletin said.

Maharashtra

The number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra climbed to 94,041 on Wednesday with 3,254 new patients being reported, a health official said.

The death toll due to the pandemic in the state reached 3,438 with 149 new deaths being recorded during the day.1,879 patients were discharged from hospitals, taking the number of recovered patients to 44,517, he added.

Maharashtra coronavirus figures are as follows: Positive cases 94,041, new cases 3,254, deaths 3,438, discharged 44,517, active cases 46,074, people tested so far 5,93,784.

Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu on Wednesday reported an all-time single day high of 1,927 new coronavirus cases while 19 people died, taking the infection count to 36,841 and the toll to 326, the government said.

A total of 17,675 samples were tested, taking the total number of specimens examined so far to 6,38,846.

Of the fresh infections, Chennai accounted for 1,392 cases as its tally alone touched 25,937.

With the state recording 1,500 plus cases for the fourth successive day, the cumulative tally of positive cases stood at 36,841 with 17,179 active cases. Those dead included a 38-year old man and he was among 15 people with co-morbidities.

West Bengal

Seventeen COVID-19 patients died in West Bengal on Wednesday, taking the death toll due to the disease to 432 in the state, the health department said in a bulletin.

Thirteen of the fresh deaths were due to comorbidities, where coronavirus was incidental, it said, adding that the state has witnessed 288 such deaths so far.

The state also reported 343 fresh coronavirus cases during the day, including 110 from Kolkata, the bulletin said.

The number of COVID-19 cases in West Bengal stands at 9,328 now, including 5,117 active ones. A total of 2,97,419 samples have so far been tested for the disease in the state.

Gujarat

Gujarat reported 510 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the tally to 21,554, the state health department said.

With the death of 34 more patients, the toll in the state rose to 1,347, it said. At the same time, 370 patients recovered, raising the number of discharged patients to 14,743, it said.

Gujarat now has 5,464 active cases, of which the condition of 69 patients is critical,the department said.

Gujarat COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 21,554, new cases 510, deaths 1,347, discharged 14,743, active cases 5,464, people tested so far 2,66,404.

The number of coronavirus cases in Ahmedabad district rose to 15,305 as 343 new cases were reported on Wednesday, said the health department.

Death toll due to the pandemic in the district rose to 1,092 with 26 more fatalities, it added. Ahmedabad reported 343 out of 510 coronavirus patients detected in the state on Wednesday and 26 out of 34 deaths.

Punjab

A coronavirus patient died in Punjab on Wednesday as 86 more people, including a police official, contracted the infection, pushing the states COVID tally to 2,805, officials said.

Punjab continues to see an upward trend in coronavirus cases as more than 350 people tested positive for it in the past six days. Among the fresh cases, 19 were detected in Pathankot. The number included a station house officer, officials said.

As many as 65 coronavirus patients recovered and were discharged from various hospitals in the state. With this, the total number of cured persons reached 2,232, the bulletin said.

A total of 1,44,467 samples have been taken so far, the bulletin said.

Kerala

After witnessing a spike in infections over the past few days, Kerala reported only 65 fresh cases of COVID-19 as the total virus count touched 2,160 and the death toll climbed to 17 with the sample of an elderly man, who died three days ago, testing positive.

While 1,238 people are under treatment for the infection, 905 have recovered, including 57 who were discharged today, Health Minister K K Shailaja said.

Over two lakh are under observation. After reporting the highest single day spike of 111 cases on June 5, the state has been witnessing a decline with 108 on June 6, and 91 each on June 8 and June 9.

In the last 24 hours, 4689 samples have been sent for testing.

According to the release, samples of 98,304 people have been sent for testing and the results of 93,475, which are available, are negative. There are 163 hotspots with the addition of five new places.

Karnataka

As of date, Karnataka has reported 69 COVID-19 deaths As many as 6,041 people have tested positive for COVID- 19, including 2,862 discharges and 3,108 active cases.

Munish Moudgil, chief of COVID-19 War Room in the state, said most COVID-19 deaths in Karnataka occur when infected elderly people, those with Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) or any other symptoms delay reaching designated hospitals.

He said about 65 per cent of deceased patients are those who suffer from SARI and are aged above 60. The death rate due to SARI is 43 per cent for those in the 40-60 age group, he said, releasing data on coronavirus deaths, to reporters.

In the same age group, the mortality due to Influenza Like Illness (ILI) was 17.4 per cent, whereas it is 11.1 per cent among people aged above 60.

He said 25 per cent of symptomatic patients aged above 60 succumb to the virus, while it was 10.7 per cent in the 40-60 age group.

Madhya Pradesh

The COVID-19 case count in Madhya Pradesh crossed 10,000-mark on Wednesday as 200 more people tested positive for the infection in the past 24 hours, health department officials said.

The number of coronavirus positive patients now stands at 10,049. With seven more persons succumbing to the infection, the state death toll increased to 427, the officials said. Indore reported the highest 51 new cases, followed by 47 in Bhopal.

Coronavirus figures in MP are as follows: Total cases: 10,049, active cases: 2,730, new cases: 200, death toll: 427, recovered: 6,892, people tested so far: 2,28,042.

Rajasthan

The death toll due to COVID-19 rose to 259 in Rajasthan on Wednesday, with the state recording four more fatalities. The total number of cases in the desert state climbed to 11,600 as 355 more people tested positive for the disease, officials said.

One death each was reported in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Bikaner besides a patient from another state, they said.

Of the fresh cases, 110 were reported in Bharatpur, 51 in Jaipur, 44 in Pali, 41 in Jodhpur, 19 in Sikar, 14 in Churu, nine in Jhunjhunu, eight each in Nagaur and Sirohi besides cases in other districts of the state.

Jaipur has reported maximum COVID-19 cases (2,411) and 119 deaths followed by 1,985 cases and 26 deaths in Jodhpur. There are 2,772 active COVID-19 cases in the state. A total of 8,195 patients have been discharged after treatment, officials added.
