Key takeaways from Nepali prime minister’s visit to India

Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba’s three-day visit to India ends on Sunday.

It was Dueba’s first official visit to the country after assuming the post for the fifth time. He was accompanied by his wife Arzu Rana Deuba and a 50-strong delegation.

Here are the key takeaways from the visit:

The delegation, which included Foreign Minister Narayan Khadka, started off from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on Friday for New Delhi.

Meeting with Indian Foreign Minister

Deuba met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday. He later visited the BJP office in New Delhi.

The PMs meet 

Dueba met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Saturday. The two PMs jointly inaugurated the 35-km Jaynagar-Kurtha railway service between India and Nepal.

The service will crisscross from Jaynagar in Bihar to Kurtha in Janakpur, Nepal. The Jaynagar-Kurtha section is part of the 68.7km Jaynagar-Bijalpura-Bardidas rail link built under the Government of India’s grant assistance of NPR8.77 billion.

The new infrastructure for broad gauge railway operations was built by replacing the narrow gauge, which was stopped more than seven years ago. Nepal Railway Company made all necessary preparations for the inaugural ceremony.

Visit to Varanasi

Deuba on Sunday visited Varanasi, where he was welcomed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The CM greeted him with a bouquet upon his arrival at Lal Bahadur Shashtri International Airport.

The PM and his wife Arzu Rana Deuba are scheduled to visit several shrines in Varanasi, including the Kaal Bhairav Temple. 

Deuba is also expected to visit the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, a key developmental project inaugurated by the Uttar Pradesh government last year, which connects the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the ghats along the Ganga River.
