JNU VC Jagadesh Kumar appeals to students to maintain peace

A day after violence engulfed the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus, its Vice Chancellor (VC) M Jagadesh Kumar, on Monday (January 6), appealed to the students to maintain peace while stating that the top priority of the varsity is to protect the academic interests of students.

In a statement, Kumar said, “Would like to appeal to all students to maintain peace. The University stands by all students to facilitate their pursuit of academic activities. We will ensure that their winter semester registration will take place without any hindrance. The top priority of the University is to protect the academic interests of our students.”

This appeal comes in the backdrop of the university students’ union (JNUSU) holding the VC responsible for the mayhem and demanding his resignation.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) called an urgent meeting with the JNU administration, including the VC, in connection with the violence that took place on the university campus, officials said.

The ministry had on Sunday sought a report from the JNU Registrar Pramod Kumar over the brutality that was let loose on students and teachers.

To prevent any untoward incidents, a huge posse of policemen were deployed outside Shashtri Bhawan which houses the HRD Ministry.

However, the JNU violence case has been transferred to Delhi police Crime Branch and police officials will talk to students and start collecting evidence.
