Extremely heavy rainfall warning for Mumbai; holiday for schools, colleges
Incessant rains lashed Mumbai and its surrounding areas on Saturday (August 3) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that more heavy rainfall is expected in the metropolis during the next 24 hours, prompting authorities to declare a holiday in schools and colleges. The IMD cautioned people, saying heavy rainfall warning on a “very-high-tide day” (Saturday) is “not a good combination”.
Maldives ex-vice president Adeeb & nine other deported from Tamil Nadu
Maldives ex-vice president Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor, who had been detained for entering India illegally, was deported from the country to the Maldives in the wee hours of Saturday (August 3). Maldives security personnel also got hold of nine other Indonesians who accompanied him in the boat. An official privy to the developments in Tuticorin port told The Federal that he was handed over to the security officers of Maldives at around 1 a.m. on Saturday.
Kerala IAS officer arrested in scribe’s death, had accused female friend
IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman was arrested in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday (August 3) for causing the death of a scribe by allegedly driving in an inebirated state, police said. The 33-year-old IAS officer, who was appointed Survey Director by the state cabinet on Thursday, was arrested under Section 279 (rash driving on a public way) and 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

As doctors of two Centre-run hospitals, AIIMS and Safdarjung, continued to boycott work for the third consecutive day on Saturday (August 3) in protest against the NMC Bill, the Health Ministry warned them of taking punitive action like termination of their service if they do not join duty immediately. Following the ministry’s direction, the two hospital administrations have issued memorandums to their resident doctors to resume work at their respective departments.
China no longer top trading partner of US
As a result of their ongoing trade, China is no longer the top trading partner of the United States and has been replaced by America’s neighbours Mexico and Canada, according to a media report. In the first half of the year, Mexico was the top trading partner of the United States followed by Canada, the latest official data reveals, according to The Wall Street Journal.
BJP MLA sympathises with Unnao rape accused legislator
A BJP legislator sympathised with MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, accused of raping a minor girl and killing her two aunts, and expressed his “best wishes” for him to overcome his “difficult times”. Days after Sengar, a four-time legislator, was expelled from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Hardoi MLA Ashish Singh Ashu was caught on camera, hoping Sengar comes out of jail soon. A video clip of his remarks has surfaced online.
