EVMs: Poll panel headache, oppn parties villain, voters apprehension

The controversy surrounding the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) simply refuses to fade away. Recently the movement of EVMs from Erode to Theni in Tamil Nadu, ahead of re-polling in a few booths created a furore.

The latest instance of EMVs being transported without any security in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar also led to suspicion in the minds of the voters. Even though the poll panel has dubbed the controversy as baseless, the debate refuses to wither away. Adding to that is the demand of political parties that 50 per cent of the VVPATs be counted in polling stations, a plea that was rejected by the Supreme Court.

With less than 48 hours to go for the counting, opposition parties are scheduled to sit on a dharna in front of the Election Commission of India demanding that their demand be conceded.
