BJP MLA draws flak for shoving party women councillors


A Karnataka BJP MLA has landedin a row with a video purportedly showing him pushing partywomen councillors to prevent them from contesting the posts ofpresident and vice president of a Town Municipal Council,going viral.

The state Congress has shared the video on itsTwitter handle.

According to information received, the incidenttook place in Bagalkote district on November 9 when the MLA ofTerdal constituency Siddu Savadi allegedly shoved BJPcouncillors Savitha Hurrakadli, Godavari and Chandni Naik.

These women had aligned with the Congress after theywere denied tickets by their party and decided to contest theposts of president and vice president of the Mahalingpur TownMunicipal Council with the support of Congress members.

When the women were going to file their nominationpapers, Savadi allegedly tried to prevent them from enteringthe municipal council building.Soon other BJP workers joinedSavadi and allegedly manhandled them.

In the melee, Savadi allegedly shoved Savitha to theground.

Savadi has denied the allegation, saying that he hashigh respect for women and it was not his culture to push andshove them.

He termed the charges as baseless allegations totarnish his image.

According to police, they have registered a case ontheir own as those who indulged in violence ignored the policepresence.

None of the women came forward to lodge anycomplaint,police said.

Sharing the video, the state Congress tweeted “TheBJP MLA of Teradal Siddu Savadi assaulting a woman during themunicipal elections is a matter of shame for the entirestate.” The party demanded that Chief Minister B SYediyurappa and Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai take the caseseriously and arrest the guilty.
