Response is good in South; business in Hindi circuit less than 50% so far, but film doing well in metros like Mumbai and Delhi and in parts of UP
Avatar: The Way of Water had a stupendous opening weekend in India, according to production firm Disney India, which is also distributing the film in India. James Cameron’s epic sci-fi film collected Rs 138 crore at the box office in the first three days in India.
The long-awaited sequel to Avatar (2009) has lived up to the hype and expectations, and it has been well received by the audiences and critics alike. The film opened extremely well in South India on Friday, and ticket sales picked up in the Hindi belt over the weekend.
The film has been distributed by Disney India in most parts of the country. Sources in Disney India have revealed that the net collection was Rs 40 crore on Friday, Rs 40.5 crore on Saturday, and Rs 58 crore on Sunday, adding up to Rs 138.5 crore in the first weekend.
The Federal asked Uday Arya, senior executive at Disney India, about the response to the film. He said, “The response has been terrific. It’s much better than the first instalment. Thanks to technology, people can watch the film in 3D, 4D, and Imax. Watching a film is a different and wonderful experience with this technology.”
He added, “The first instalment of Avatar ran for two to three months in India, but this time we can’t expect that. We have released the film on a huge number of screens, and multiplexes are increasing the number of shows. We are expecting the film to do well even this week, and it needs to be seen what happens from next week onwards.”
According to reports, business in the Hindi circuit has been less than 50% so far. The film is doing well in metros like Mumbai and Delhi and in parts of UP. The box office collections are likely to drop starting Monday as it happens with most films. But it will be interesting to see if the film can draw the audiences to the theatres on the second weekend and beyond.
