The people of Amethi are not fools will not fall for the lies that are being spread by BJP candidate Smrithi Irani, Congress leader Priyanka Vadra Gandhi has said.

Taking a combative stance, Priyanka Gandhi said in her brother Rahul Gandhi’s constituency on Monday (April 22) that ‘lies were being blatantly spread.’ “Everywhere you go you lie. The people of Amethi aren’t fools. They are not just fooling the people of Amethi, they are fooling everybody,” she said.

Reasserting that the Gandhi clan’s connect to the villages, she said. “You have seen us for generations. You saw Rajiv Gandhi (father) going from village to village. Rahul Gandhi goes to villages. See Varanasi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not gone to even one village. Your chief minister (Yogi Adityanath), has the poor to wash his hands and feet,” Priyanka Gandhi said.

Makin it a point to bring up employment as the key issue rather than nationalism, Priyanka said, “They destroyed 50 lakh jobs – the same people who said they will create so many jobs. Farmers are crying in distress, they say stray animals are destroying our farms. In Bhadohi, traders are suffering because of Goods and Services Tax (GST). Their campaign is far from reality. I see sorrow wherever I go.”

She said Smriti Irani had ‘distributed shoes’ in Amethi. ” Whoever is insulting you, you show them what you are. You are the ones who make us, and you are doing us a favour. We need to return the favour.”

Priyanka Gandhi, the Congress general secretary in charge of eastern UP, has been campaigning hard for the party. Inversely, the party has been banking on her to connect to the masses.

From Amethi, she also visited neighbouring Rae Bareli where Sonia Gandhi is contesting against Dinesh Pratap Singh of the BJP.
