Marsh rests feet on WC trophy: Shami reacts; police complaint filed in UP
In the complaint, a man alleged that Marsh had by his act insulted the people of India and disrespected the trophy, which was handed over to the winning team by “the Prime Minister of the country”.
Australia’s Mitchell Marsh resting his feet on the World Cup 2023 trophy had triggered a debate online with most of the Indian cricket fans slamming the all-rounder. Now, Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has reacted to it while there is a police complaint filed against Marsh in Uttar Pradesh.
After Australia defeated India by six wickets to claim their sixth World Cup title, in Ahmedabad on Sunday (November 19), the champion cricketers celebrated their win and also posted pictures on social media.
One of the images shared by Australian captain Pat Cummins showed Marsh sitting on a couch, stretching his legs and resting them on the World Cup trophy.
While India fans hit out at Marsh for this “celebration”, there were others who defended him saying there was nothing wrong with it. Cricket fans in India brought up the topic of the different cultures of the two countries.
When Shami, who played in the World Cup 2023 final against Australia, was asked to comment on Marsh’s act, he said he was hurt by it.
“This hurt me a lot as well. All countries fight for this trophy, everyone wants to lift the trophy over their head. And I didn’t like that he rested his foot on that trophy. He should not be doing that,” Shami, who finished as the leading wicket-taker (24) of World Cup 2023, said in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, a leader of an activist group in Uttar Pradesh has filed a police complaint against Marsh for putting his feet on the World Cup trophy, Aligarh Police said on Friday.
The complaint was lodged on Tuesday by Pandit Keshav Dev, the president of the Bhrashtachar Virodhi Sena, at the Delhi Gate Police Station in Aligarh.
“A complaint has been received. But so far a case has not been registered and further procedure will follow only after receiving a report from the cyber cell,” Superintendent of Police (City) Mrigank Shekhar said.
Keshav Dev in his complaint alleged that the Australian cricketer had by his act insulted the people of India and disrespected the trophy, which was handed over to the winning team by “the Prime Minister of the country”.
