Mitchell Marsh rests feet on World Cup trophy, faces flak from Indian fans
Cricket fans and other social media users from India spoke about the difference between the cultural backgrounds of India and Australia.
After Australia defeated India in the final to win their sixth World Cup title on Sunday (November 19) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the players have been sharing images of celebrations on social media.
One of the pictures that caught the attention of Indian netizens is of Mitchell Marsh resting his feet on the World Cup trophy. The photo has now gone viral and the Australian all-rounder is facing flak for his act.
The image of Marsh keeping his feet on the World Cup trophy was shared by captain Pat Cummins on his Instagram stories. It was one of the several images posted by the skipper. Marsh was one of the seven Australian players who won their second ODI World Cup trophy on Sunday. They had won their first in 2015.
Cricket fans and other social media users from India spoke about the difference between the cultural backgrounds of India and Australia. While most of them criticised Marsh, he had some backers too.
A user shared an image of former India captain Kapil Dev keeping the 1983 World Cup trophy on his head and wrote, “Difference between our culture & theirs.”
Another person wrote on X (Twitter), “Bro, show some respect to the World Cup trophy. Ask Indian fans or team India about the value of this trophy.”
“For Australians.. this is absolutely fine,” an X user wrote.
“If this trophy were in the hands of the Indian team today, it would have been kept on the head which is our tradition!” said another user.
In the ICC World Cup 2023 final on Sunday, India were restricted to a below-par 240 all out and Australia chased down the target to win by six wickets. Travis Head was the Player of the match for his superb 137.
India had a 10-match unbeaten run going into the summit clash but their only loss in the tournament came on the big day.
