COVID-19: India reports 83K cases; highest single-day spike since March

A record spike of 83,833 cases has pushed India's COVID-19 tally past the 38-lakh mark, according to the Union Health Ministry data on Thursday (September 3).


A record spike of 83,833 cases has pushed India’s COVID-19 tally past the 38-lakh mark, according to the Union Health Ministry data on Thursday (September 3).

This is the highest single-day jump in COVID cases in India since the beginning of the pandemic.

The total number of infections in the country now stands at 38,53,406.

In the last 24 hours, 11,72,179 samples were tested, which is the highest number of tests conducted in a single day so far. The total number of samples tested crossed 4.55 crore, with 4,55,09,380 swabs having been tested so far.

Meanwhile, the death toll due to the disease rose to 67,376, with 1,043 fatalities being recorded in the last 24 hours. On the other hand, 29,70,492 have recovered from the infection in the country, pushing the recovery rate to 77 per cent.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state by the pandemic, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

India is the country with the third-highest coronavirus caseload in the world after the United States and Brazil.

Maharashtra reported 17,433 new COVID-19 cases, highest single-day count so far, taking its tally to 8,25,739, while the death toll crossed the 25,000-mark, said a health official. The state also reported 292 fresh deaths, 34 of them in Mumbai city, pushing up the fatality count to 25,195, he added. The previous highest one-day count was 16,867 cases, reported on August 29. Also, 13,959 people were discharged in the state, taking the number of recovered cases to 5,98,496, the official said. Maharashtra currently has 2,01,703 active cases.

Meanwhile, the alrming rise in coronavirus cases in Andhra Pradesh continued as the state added 10,000 plus fresh infections for the eighth straight day, taking the count past the 4.5 lakh mark. As a five-figure daily increase seemed to have become the norm of late, the government, in its daily COVID-19 bulletin, recorded 10,392 fresh positive cases, 8,454 recoveries and 72 deaths in 24 hours ending 9 am on Wednesday. The state’s tally of overall cases reached 4,55,531, while the total recoveries increased to 3,48,330. After a total of 4,125 deaths, a sum of 1,03,076 cases remained active in the state, as per the bulletin. The state so far tested 38,43,550 samples at the rate of 71,977 per million population.

Tamil Nadu reported 5,990 new COVID cases, taking the tally to 4,39,959, while 98 more fatalities pushed the death toll to 7,516. As many as 75,829 samples were tested and 49,64,141 specimens have been examined till date, a health department bulletin said. There are 154 COVID labs, 64 in government and 90 in private facilities. Tamil Nadu does not use Rapid Antigen Diagnostic Tests and all tests are RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction) based. With the discharge of 5,891 patients from various hospitals, the cumulative recoveries and active cases stood at 3,80,063 and 52,380 respectively.

Karnataka reported its biggest single day spike of over 9,800 new COVID-19 cases and 113 deaths, taking the infection count to 3,61,341 and the toll to 5,950, the health department said. The day saw the state testing a whopping 73,317 samples, including 38,735 using the rapid antigen kits, as the cumulative specimens examined crossed the 30 lakh mark. A total of 6,287 patients were discharged taking the overall recoveries to 2,60,913. The bulletin said the states cumulative positive cases stood at 3,61,341, including 5,950 deaths and 2,60,913 discharges. There were 94,459 active cases.
